Day 22 - 24 - Carlsbad

DAY 1 - Traveling to Carlsbad

Long but easy drive from Santa Fe to Carlsbad.
The terrain was mostly flat and we lost about 4,000 feet in elevation - gradually.

Leaving Santa Fe
We really enjoyed our time here!

Miles of grazing land for cattle
We even saw several herds of antelope

And when we got to the Roswell area, we were surprised with all the agriculture!
We are headed back to Roswell in a few days - more on that then.

We were surprised to learn that Carlsbad is mostly a oil community
Lots of muddy trucks everywhere!!

DAY 2 - Carlsbad Caverns

The road to Carlsbad Caverns

Note:  There is no way to capture the beauty of the caverns in a photo!!

We decide to walk down the Natural Entrance trail.  1 1/4 miles straight down!!

You can see the cave swallows flying

So many types of formations!
A geologist's dream!

We finally get to the bottom and there is so much more to see!

A self-guided tour to The Big Room

Our new friends - Jack & Jan
They are traveling with our RV caravan

I bet you can guess what Tom said about this formation!

I'm sure Steven Spielberg got some his inspiration from these formations

An underground lake

The King's Room - Guided Tour

Someone in our group had a blue flashlight.  I got a couple of unique pictures.

This was the lunch room - underground.

Thank goodness there was an elevator to get back to the surface or
I would still be down there!
An exhausting but awesome day!

DAY 3 - A visit to the Living Desert State Park

After yesterday, we needed something a little less strenuous!

A view of Carlsbad.

Our companions for this part of the trip - Denis & Vivian
